Michigan Oil & Gas Maps

RMP has been following Michigan oil & gas since 2011. We collect geo-location and production data from the MDEQ (now re-marketed as the Michigan EGLE. All of the links to maps you see below will soon be in our “Generation 2” mapping software. The links to the maps below are cool, but the Generation 2 maps are going to have more features and supporting videos to teach people about Michigan petroleum geology & history.

This page was updated 8/30/2019 to include links to the Generation 1 maps. When the Generation 2 maps are ready this page will be updated once again.

High Volume Hydraulic Fracture Wells in Michigan

Abstract:  There were only about 50 or so permits issued for High Volume Hydraulically Fractured (HVHF) in Michigan’s history.  It was quickly discovered by RMP that the objective of this process in Michigan was a failure.  RMP reported HVHF was a failure first in June of 2013.  It took most environmental groups about two more years to realize RMP had called this.  RMP was able to be the first to report because of our diligence to following the data and using our sophisticated mapping and data management software.

Enbridge Line 5 Map

Abstract:  Line 5 runs from Superior Wisconsion on Lake Superior across the southern coast of Michigan’s Upper peninsula, across the Straits of Mackinac near the Mighty Mac, and then through the lower peninsula to cross into Sarnia Canada.  This map loads zoomed in on the North Straits Pump Station which is the point of a leak that is still currently in remediation.  RMP wrote a detailed story about the oil leak at the North Straits Pump Station here.

Michigan Oil Wells with Confirmed Contamination Events by the MDEQ/EGLE

Link:  https://www.respectmyplanet.org/public_html/full_screen/demo_all

Abstract:  The State of Michigan used to keep a list of contamination of oil wells called the “SAP List”.  Governor John Engler tried to squash this list in 1996.  RMP volunteer Jacque Rose obtained a copy of the CD ROM version of the list that some one held onto.   Matt Wandel, RMP founder & president, hand copied the data from the CD ROM into a digital format to work with RMP’s mapping software.  RMP is the only website in Michigan that is able to show you this map.  Each location on this map had a ground soil or ground water contamination event.

Abstract:  The list of wells on this map was furnished by Rick Henderson (MDEQ/EGLE) and Larry Organek (MPSC).  RMP wrote about Michigan’s leading role in Carbon Carpture & Sequestration (CCS) here.  Click on the link above to check out all the CO2 sequestration units in the Michigan Basin.
