I was disturbed to learn that when quantifying the amount of water used during oil/gas development, the MDEQ does NOT count the H20 used during the drilling process–only that which is used during the completion phase. That begs the question … Why?
Also, I would be curious to know from that agency if they ever denied a water withdrawal request? However, when I see that some wells in Michigan have used tens of millions of gallons of water — for one solitary well — I think I know the answer to my question.
In my opinion, instead of watching out for Michigan’s environment, the MDEQ acts more like an arm of the oil industry.
