About 28% of our imports of crude oil and petroleum products came from the Persian Gulf countries of Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Our largest sources of net crude oil and petroleum product imports were Canada and Saudi Arabia. No matter how much oil America produces, we will always rely on imports from Canada, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Mexico, Russia, and others. This dependence will never cease as long as we continue to rely on the internal combustion engine for our vehicles and standard gasoline fueling stations. The API is even lobbying now for expansion of crude infrastructure like Arctic drilling, KXL, and calling for the US to lift it’s export ban while we continue to rely on foreign imports. Even as we continue to import crude oil from hostile countries, countries that support jihadists, and allies alike, the EIA estimates world oil reserves <a title="The EIA estimates proved world crude oil reserves will last about 25 years. Why couldn’t we shift our capital spending away from crude oil except for in areas where it is critical to our near term energy security and national security? Those are rhetorical questions of course because the answer is: we can. The technology exists today to start changing the vehicles on our roads from those that run on gasoline to those that run on electricity from a chemical reaction between H2 & atmospheric O2. And, while the only realistic way to ramp up hydrogen production in the near term is with natural gas and coal, the shift away from crude oil gives water a chance to compete as a renewable fuel source; this is a very important milestone in the hydrogen economy. When water is given a chance to compete as a renewable fuel, it will win. Water is simply a better choice to power our grid than hydrocarbons or salts for a long-term sustainable economy that supports good jobs and reduced waste. RMP will continue to demonstrate this point as long as our organization exists.

Phasing internal combustion engines out of our economy will obviously not happen overnight. It may even take decades to phase out our current energy infrastructure for a new one, but it is the best thing for the American economy, our national security, and our children’s future. Money spent with the spirit of expanding crude oil infrastructure perverts common sense for greed and ignoble intentions.

The Hydrogen Economy makes its big debut in just a few short years in Tokyo.

The science of hydrogen fuel cells does not get talked about much in the US media in 2015. The Hydrogen Economy, however, is approaching its big debut in the <a title="The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo is when the world will be formally introduced to the Hydrogen Economy. While countries around the world subsidize the megawatt by megawatt transition to fuel cells, some legislators in America try to move policy backward by trying to stifle positive progress for the US economy with tax hikes that hurt stable job creation. Fuel cell technology is nothing new. What is different now, however, are advances in things like solar panels, wind turbines, and the gasification of dirty fuels like American coal, pet coke, and landfill waste. Our legislators should be incentivizing infrastructure investment in the Hydrogen Economy to create sustainable jobs. Technological advances are starting to make the possibility of turning water into hydrogen to power fuel cells the most practical application for providing 100% of the world’s energy from sun and water in the years to come. Our legislators should want to reduce taxes, create jobs, and improve national security rather than allow lobbying groups to keep us stuck with crude oil and its hidden tax burdens.

The oil & gas industry has grown by adding 162,000 jobs between 2007 and 2012 while the US economy overall grew our workforce by about 1 million jobs. The recent boom in oil & gas hiring can mostly be tied to advances in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. RMP understands hydraulic fracturing, horizontal drilling, and oil & gas production as well as anybody as demonstrated by the data we bring to life on our exclusive map (link removed – our Michigan oil map has been taken down for now). Like all oil & gas booms, however, these volatile jobs will be lost quickly when the boom goes bust as is characteristic for employment in the oil industry. As demonstrated by the numbers above, nearly 98% of the world’s crude oil reserves exist outside our borders; the recent job creation in America simply cannot be sustained. In fact, Saudi Arabia, who can produce oil at a much lower cost than oil produced from America’s hydraulically fractured formations, has recently flexed its muscles with a casual twist of a spigot to show who is king of oil production. Saudi Arabia’s actions to preserve crude oil market share, have already significantly altered 2015 capital budgets for multi-billion dollar companies domestically and around the world.

Capital budgets and jobs tied to crude reserves produced in the United States like drilling, completing, trucking, man camps, and pipelines all come with more and more volatility as decades tick by. The rhetoric broadcast on primetime TV commercials by Brooke Alexander about energy security and energy independence can be truthful in part but can also be misleading and missing key information that could affect the decisions and sentiments of viewers [and voters]. If material job cuts and capital spending cuts in the US are fundamental occurrences to an economic sector, it’s time to fix that sector with smarter legislation.

The companies that have been doing much of the hiring in recent years related to drilling, completing, trucking, housing, and excavation are now in fact laying off many of the workers that were just hired over the last five years. It’s a clear indication that companies creating jobs in the crude oil industry may have the best intentions of helping provide jobs and tax revenues but are vulnerable to forces outside of their control. Crude oil production changes can cause even the largest companies in the world to quickly fall to their knees when countries like Saudi Arabia flex their muscles.

The hydrogen economy does not have these issues as hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and will allow every sovereign nation on this planet to eventually be 100% energy independent without crude oil and produce energy from water and/or from garbage. Without crude oil, we can have a sustainable and redundant electrical grid and transportation sector powered by hydrogen fuel cells as internal combustion engines, conventional power plants, and crude oil are phased out.

STRAIT OF HORMUZ (June 10, 2012) The San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS New York (LPD 21), front, and the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) transit the Strait of Hormuz. The costs of getting refined crude to our troops alone in order to operate in hostile countries is in the billions of US dollars. The cost of infrastructure built in hostile countries with US tax dollars is also in the billions. The US has also used billions of tax dollars to contract private for-profit military service companies to protect crude oil infrastructure in countries like Iraq. Our military protects this oil infrastructure to make sure America has the crude we need to keep our cars & trucks and economy going. Many of these hostile countries where US tax dollars are spent act as subsidies for private companies operating where ISIS enjoys stronghold positions. Trillions of US tax dollars have also been spent protecting ports and shipping lanes like the Strait of Hormuz in order for supertankers to make safe passage through strategic maritime choke points. Those same tax dollars could be spent at home creating jobs or go toward other military needs around the world while improving relationships with more people in the Middle East than just princes, kings, and royals.

Many of the companies that have financial interests in hostile countries where ISIS operates have a dilemma. They’re forced to spend millions of dollars on financing the campaigns of politicians who effectively sponsor legislation related to maintaining the status quo of the crude oil monopoly on our transportation sector. Some politicians accept donations from oil companies for campaign financing and have financial conflicts of interest related to the legislation they sponsor. Their hope is that if we keep repeating the script on Brooke’s TV commercials, it will become true through the repetition of hearing it; even though it is profoundly misleading. This unfortunately just delays the inevitable truth that the time is now to start the responsible migration away from crude oil as an energy source before we lose our competitive edge in world energy markets.

Energy is a tax. Military spending is a tax. When politicians advocate for legislation that asks for capital spending to expand and perpetuate crude oil energy or stifle alternatives, they’re putting our soldiers in harm’s way unnecessarily, perpetuating terrorism, increasing taxes, and creating unsustainable jobs whether they understand the economic consequences of their actions or not. President Eisenhower, one of only a handful of 5 star generals in US military history, warned us as he was leaving office, and no longer had a horse in the race of US politics, to beware of the military industrial complex. We can responsibly start the migration away from crude oil as an energy source by displacing internal combustion engines with fuel cell electric vehicles while improving our national security and reducing taxes.

In 1989 it was a big deal for a production engine to achieve 300hp. My dad would often bring home developmental Corvettes from work and I would get a chance to drive them. I got to feel the power of these amazing Corvettes as a young man as I laid down rubber throughout Farmington Hills, Michigan. I remember well the half upset and half amused look on my dad’s face when I pulled into the garage and the smell of burnt rubber started to permeate the air. The car and its internal combustion engine that my dad and his colleagues brought to life was amazingly fun to drive.

The people of Detroit have helped make internal combustion engines that, unfortunately, have helped give crude oil enough value to form monopolies that influence bad legislation and poison free market economics. General Motors, the company created and produced the Corvette that debuted in 1992, has more fuel cell patents than any other company in the world. GM claims their first production fuel cell vehicle will arrive around the year 2020. GM and Ford will soon start to make FCEVs here in Michigan to compete with those from Japan and Korea. We can help make a big impact on improving America’s economy by reducing the need for crude oil and help fix an economic problem that we unwittingly helped create with the internal combustion engine. We the people should lobby for public H2 fueling stations to start a friendly competition with other states like California to see who can build a better grid faster.

Detroit should have high regard for the small block V8 engines it has designed and produced over the years as well as many other four and six cylinder engines. Cars like Corvettes and Ford Mustangs have been fun to drive with their sweet sounding engines and the exhilaration of running the shifter through the gears. We’ve had advanced engineering come out of Detroit that we should be very proud of and we are. These internal combustion engines, however, should start to make their way into the halls of our automotive museums. We can still build cars that are a lot of fun and utility to drive without internal combustion engines. The age of electrification is here and it makes more economic sense to stop burning fuels and start using electrolysis and pyrolysis to make hydrogen to power our vehicles. We need to start a conversation with the API about their transition plan for the benefit of the workers in their industry.

The conversation needs to be started about the responsible migration away from the use of crude oil; a migration that looks out for the American worker, the American taxpayer, and America’s retirees. I tweeted to Linda Rozett, the director of communications for the API (@lrozett), the following: “fossil fuels won’t last forever. What’s the API’s plan for a responsible migration toward a post hydrocarbon society?” When I thought that she didn’t reply to the tweet after a couple days I didn’t think much of it. But, when I went to look back at her twitter account I noticed that she had responded in a manner of sorts. She went through a process to remove me as a follower rather than address the question. The API has spent untold amounts of money to create EID and pay for the TV commercials referenced above as part of what they call an education and public outreach program. Instead of reaching out to the public, however, Linda just avoided her responsibility to the public. Her actions belie the rhetoric published by her organization. People like myself and many other Americans have simple and straight forward questions about natural resources owned by the public. These questions are based on science, evidence, and facts like those cited throughout this post. I would like to think we could have an open dialogue where questions like mine are addressed and talked about in a civil manner. No American wants to see any other American that wants to work out of a job. RMP only seeks to start a dialogue about how we can responsibly move our country away from an energy source [crude oil] that is unsustainable in the coming decades.

As Detroiters, we gave crude value with the internal combustion engines we made famous. Now it is time to retire the internal combustion engine and it will be tough to close such a storied chapter of our history. Significant challenges remain in order to graduate from the hydrocarbon economy to the hydrogen economy. Storage solutions for hydrogen are complex but are getting better with each manufactured iteration. Building fueling stations costs real money, but these investments have a high rate of return like Eisenhower’s investment in building the Interstate Highway System. Any money spent to incentivize adoption of FCEVs and the Hydrogen Economy pays greater dividends to US taxpayers than investing in crude oil. Moving from the internal combustion engine to Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) will be a major progression in America’s great history and a great paradigm shift in our domestic economy and the world economy. Detroit can still make world class automobiles that compete with Japanese, Korean, and German made vehicles. We can make world class cars that perform on race tracks and climb rugged terrain.

When politicians are brave enough and smart enough to support good sense legislation, America wins. In 1961 fuel cells probably seemed like a pipe dream in the halls of Purdue University. In the late 1970’s my dad took me to the Detroit Auto Show before there was any glitz & glamour in Cobo Hall. The Auto Show was just a bunch of folding card tables with pamphlets on them, some carpet remnants covering the Cobo floor, and cars parked throughout the building. In a back corner display against a wall was a Honda fuel cell exhibit. My dad took time to teach me about how Honda was one of the most advanced fuel cell developers in the world in the late 1970’s. He explained to me how fuel cells worked and how one day they might become mass produced. Now in 2015, at the North American International Auto Show, which is now such a gala event, Honda unveiled an FCV concept that looks more geared toward real mass manufacturing than anything we’ve ever seen before. Today, Toyota Motor Company is releasing video after video of their Mirai fuel cell vehicle assembly plant in Japan as they gear up for mass production of fuel cell electric vehicles. Toyota is investing millions of dollars into fueling stations in Japan & California. Toyota recently even gave away all of its fuel cell patents to help kickstart the Hydrogen Economy in America. Let’s hope Michigan steps up its participation in this exciting transition.

In the 54 years since Professor Kromer spoke about fuel cell technology in that Purdue classroom in 1961, we have reached a turning point in the practical application of the hydrogen economy. Advances in solar panels and the capture of energy from the sun have made the hydrogen fuel cell economy a viable solution for 100% of the world’s energy needs. Crude oil can be phased out of our economy responsibly with <a title="Energy is essence a tax.
