{"id":5403,"date":"2024-05-02T21:21:58","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T01:21:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.respectmyplanet.org\/publications\/?p=5236"},"modified":"2026-04-06T16:24:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T20:24:06","slug":"norcal-zero-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.respectmyplanet.org\/publications\/fuel-cells\/norcal-zero-project","title":{"rendered":"NorCal Zero Project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It is a milestone day for hydrogen refueling.&nbsp;<span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span>The Center for Transportation and the Environment announces the inauguration of the NorCAL ZERO project.&nbsp; This new station can serve up to&nbsp; 200 Class 8 heavy duty trucks per day.&nbsp; It has a capacity of 4,000 kilograms of LH2.&nbsp; &nbsp;The station also can refuel class 1 vehicles and comes equipped with 4 light duty hoses for cars &amp; SUVs.&nbsp; The $53 million collaborative effort will help deploy 30 Hyundai Xcient Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell trucks.&nbsp; These big rigs are the world&#8217;s first mass produced Class 8 fuel cell trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.respectmyplanet.org\/publications\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/keith2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.respectmyplanet.org\/publications\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/keith2.jpeg\" alt=\"Hyundai Xcient Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell truck\" class=\"wp-image-5240\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Hyundai Xcient Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell truck at the brand new True Zero Port of Oakland HD\/LD refueling station (Photo credit Ben Xiong H2FCP.org)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>West Oakland, a historically Black and Latino community, faces outsized environmental burdens from heavy industry, freeways, and diesel trucks coming to and from the Port of Oakland. CTE projects that the NorCAL ZERO project has the potential to avoid the equivalent to 2,393,124 gallons of diesel burned.&nbsp; Burning diesel releases NOx pollution which impacts the air people breathe and is especially burdensome near a large port like the Port of Oakland where many class 8 diesel trucks gather.&nbsp; Each diesel truck replaced with a zero emission hydrogen fuel cell truck will<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p> improve public health over the six-year estimated operation of these trucks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.respectmyplanet.org\/publications\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/keith.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.respectmyplanet.org\/publications\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/keith.jpeg\" alt=\"Hyundai Xcient Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell truck\" class=\"wp-image-5239\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Hyundai Xcient Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell truck &amp; Hyundai Nexo at the True Zero Port of Oakland HD\/LD hydrogen refueling station. (Photo Credit: Ben Xiong H2FCP.org).<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The project was financed collaboratively as well with $11.98 million from CARB\u2019s California Climate Investments Program, $9.89 million from the CEC\u2019s Clean Transportation Program, $3.64 million from Alameda CTC\u2019s Clean Freight Program, $3.36 million from BAAQMD, and $24 million from project partners.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.respectmyplanet.org\/publications\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/keith4.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.respectmyplanet.org\/publications\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/keith4.jpeg\" alt=\"True Zero Port of Oakland\" class=\"wp-image-5242\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>True Zero&#8217;s Port of Oakland heavy duty &amp; light duty refueling station will store 4,000kg of LH2 onsite. It will be capable of servicing 200 class 8 heavy duty rigs per day. There are 33.6kWh of energy in one kilogram of hydrogen. (Photo Credit: Ben Xiong H2FCP.org)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Pap\u00e9 Group maintains the trucks at its San Leandro facility, where technicians receive in-depth training from Hyundai on how to service the trucks. With engineering and design support from the Fiedler Group, Pap\u00e9 Group also upgraded its maintenance facility with hydrogen detection and ventilation equipment to safely service the trucks. Additionally, the University of California Berkeley and the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project are assisting with data collection, community outreach efforts, and communication.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">The trucks will provide Glovis with a total cost of ownership over six years that is nearly equivalent to the ownership cost of Glovis\u2019 diesel trucks, with cost savings thereafter.
